The Future of the European Financial System – Between Risks and Lack of Competitiveness?

In its latest Financial Stability Report, the ECB states that stability in the financial system has improved. The European Systemic Risk Board (ESRB) also acknowledged the resilience of the banking system. Last summer, the turmoil surrounding Silicon Valley Bank and Credit Suisse had raised concerns. Currently, elevated risks remain—due to geopolitical uncertainty and developments in real estate markets, among other factors. Furthermore, significant steps toward a banking union and the strengthening of a European capital market are still lacking on an institutional level. How stable and competitive is the European banking sector? Are the existing tools sufficient to mitigate potential risks? Do developments in the U.S. commercial real estate market and the bankruptcy of the Signa Group have implications for German and European banks? How do climate risks impact stability? And how significantly does the governance of banks contribute to their robustness?
