The demand for food produced according to ecological guidelines (organic produce) continues to grow. Domestic production in Germany cannot keep pace with this development. Too few farmers have converted to organic agriculture. Currently, ca. 50% imports are needed for the market supply in Germany. German imports of organic produce nearly doubled in the past three years. The German Farmers Association has declared that its goal is not to leave the organic food market to the importers; it calls for reliability in agricultural-policy regulations as well as regional sales partnerships.
