The digital infrastructure of the Internet is finding increasing use as a market place, where supply and demand come together. The fundamental difference to the traditional markets is that a portion or entire transactions are carried out electronically. The increasing support and automation of all levels and phases of commercial trade leads to electronic market places, electronic payments, and the electronic delivery of media-based goods and services. Prof. Arnold Picot, Dominik K. Heger and Dr. Rahild Neuburger, University of Munich, analyse the deployment potential of e-commerce and the challenges it poses for enterprises.
