Retailing: Firms in Festive Spirit

The business climate indicator for retailing rose in December. Retailers were extremely satisfied with their current business situation, with turnover exceeding the levels seen last year. Business was especially good in the food and beverages segment, as well as in household goods and toys. This year's Christmas business in clothes, watches and jewellery retailing, by contrast, was modest. Companies intend to scale up their ordering activity slightly. In terms of their six-month business outlook retailers were cautiously optimistic. Sales prices will increase, although to a lesser extent than in previous months. Retailers still plan to recruit additional staff.
