New Protectionism – Dangers for Free Trade

In times of economic downturn a growing number of states are resorting to far-reaching protectionist measures. The implications of protectionism should not be underestimated: it restricts free trade on a lasting basis and constrains economic recovery. Unlike in the past, however, non-tariff measures (NTMs) are increasingly playing a decisive role. This new form of protectionism poses a serious threat to global free trade and the world economy.
