Demographic developments and the debt crisis will demand contested adjustments to welfare benefits by placing very tight constraints on the financial leeway enjoyed by the state. According to Cirsten Roppel, University of Trier, and Ulrich Roppel, MinDir a.D. Bundeskanzleramt, a trend towards basic protection is to be expected in statutory pension and health insurance. Germany is well-positioned for the future in this respect, as long as achievements to date are not called into question.
