The process of extracting natural gas from rock with low permeability, invented in the USA and now widely used there, is called "hydraulic fracturing", or fracking for short; and is controversial from an environmental point of view. This article gives a brief overview of fracking technology and subsequently outlines deposits worldwide and describes the environmental problems related to fracking. The article ends with a presentation of the current situation in Germany.
