Surfing alone with a PC or smart phone - is this what everyday life looks like in the digital society? The Ifo Institute and Initiative D21 examined how the Internet influences our social life. At a presentation in Berlin on 26 May 2001 - "Homo Digitalis - Is the Internet destroying society?" - current research results were presented and discussed by a panel of experts.
Robert A. Wieland, executive board member of Initiative D21 e.V. and managing director of TNS Infratest GmbH, reported on the current use of the Internet. Older persons, for example, still shy away from the Internet and its applications. Many of them still have little knowledge of the basic applications of the digital media. Germany, however, has made good progress in overcoming this digital divide.
