On 23 February 2011 the Ifo Institute organized a symposium together with the Bavarian Manual Trades Association entitled "Demographic Change and Skilled Labour Trends Consequences for Education and the Manual Trades". The event was chaired by Sigmund Gottlieb, Chief Editor at Bavarian Television, and included many established experts from the theoretical and practical areas of educational, labour-market and economic policy who spoke on demographic change, skilled-labour trends and educational quality. After presentations by Hans-Peter Klös, Cologne Institute of the German Economy, and Ludger Wößmann, Ifo Institute and University of Munich, a panel discussion followed with the two presenters and Martin Zeil, Bavarian State Minister of Economic Affairs, Infrastructure, Transport and Technology, Ludwig Spaenle, Bavarian State Minister for Education and Culture, Heinrich Traublinger, President of the Bavarian Manual Trades Association, and Hans-Werner Sinn, President of the Ifo Institute. The discussion focussed on the problems firms have in recruiting sufficient skilled labour and solutions to the challenges in education and the labour market. Videos of the event are available at the Media Library of the Ifo Institute: http://mediathek.cesifo-group.de.
