The primary energy consumption of the world has increased continuously in recent years. Since World War II it has climbed to the present level of 131 million gigawatt hours. This trend was only interrupted slightly between 1979 to 1982 as a result of the second oil crisis. In 2008 the worldwide recession led to a further drop. Worldwide, a fall in primary energy consumption of 1.1% was registered. This article looks at the connections between the worldwide primary and final energy consumption.
