Climate notes: A rucksack full of carbon

The question of the effects of carbon emissions has been examined in numerous studies and with different calculation methods. This article examines the question: Who causes emissions? This question can be examined from two different perspectives. On the one hand, emissions can be calculated by using a production-based approach. All emissions of a country that arise during the combustion of fossil fuels are allocated to the respective country. The consumption-based approach starts from the consumption of a country and calculates the emissions that arise during the production of goods and services. A comparison of the production- and the consumption-based approaches offers interesting insights.
