The development and production of lithium-ion batteries for vehicle applications is of strategic importance for the development of the automotive industry. Crucial for the new market for advanced battery technology is the demand development for mild hybrid, full hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles as well as for purely battery-operated electric vehicles. Ferdinand Dudenhöffer, University of Duisburg, discusses the demand development for electrified drives and the supply structures on the market for high performance electricity storage. He argues that Europe can succeed in developing a strong lithium-ion battery industry for automotive applications. If this comes about, a high value-added potential for Europe can be expected.
