Is there an exodus of young German researchers particularly to the United States? Supplementing the articles in ifo Schnelldienst, Lydia Hartwig and Johanna Witte, Bavarian State Institute for University Research and University Planning, Munich, stress the need to improve the conditions for innovative research in the German scientific system on a broad scale as an important prerequisite for the creation of new top research. They argue that the focus should be on offering talented young scientists an attractive career path; this is an area with much potential and where improvement is needed. This should include not only German scientists but researchers of all nationalities, all of whom should find attractive conditions in Germany.
