At the regional level there are clear differences in the quality of life in Germany. In western Germany, especially the south has numerous amenities, which people are willing to pay more for on the real estate market. In eastern Germany the picture is mixed. These are the results of a study conducted by the Ifo Institute on the quality of life, which uses information contained in real estate prices on the willingness to pay to determine the amenities and disagreeableness of regions. A determining component of the quality of life is above all the labour market situation. Also the geographical features, the condition for leisure activities and recreation and especially the amenities of regions frequented by tourists explain a large portion of the differences. In addition differences in the quality of life also result from local crime rates and transport infrastructure.
