In an average trade-fair year, the total expenditures of trade-fair visitors and exhibitors in Essen amount to ca. €345 million Euro. This was determined in a recent study by the Ifo Institute, commissioned by Messe Essen GmbH. In total €136 million is spent by visitors to Essen trade-fairs each year, on average, or ca. €90 per visitor. The spending is not limited to the region alone, even though the city of Essen profits most with more than €80 million. More than €29 million remains in North Rhine-Westphalia. Total spending of exhibitors averages €209 million a year. This corresponds to approximately €18,200 per exhibitor. While 59 percent of visitor spending remains in Essen, exhibitor spending is distributed differently: only a third of exhibitor expenditures are in Essen. The main reason for this is that preparatory work and elements for trade-booths come from abroad or outside Essen. The employment potential of the Essen trade-fairs is 5,550 persons a year, on average. Tax revenues induced by trade-fair visitors and exhibitors amounts to 91 €million for an average trade-fair year.
