Climate change is one of the greatest challenges for the automotive industry. Although an abundance of technological approaches is available, the European automotive industry has not achieved its self-set goal of decreasing CO2 emission. An important reason for this is car buyers' unwillingness to pay for fuel saving technologies. Ferdinand Dudenhöffer, B&D Forecast GmbH and the Center of Automotive Research (CAR) at the University of Applied Science, Gelsenkirchen, proposes the introduction of a trading system for CO2 emissions to reach the goal set by the EU Commission of achieving an average of around 130 grammes CO2 per kilometre.
