The poor results of German pupils in international tests led to a broad discussion of the German educational system and to subsequent reforms. Prof. Johanna Wanka, president of the Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of the Länder, sees promising approaches and initial successes. Dr. Ludwig Eckinger, chairman of the Association of Education (VBE) would like to achieve the necessary quality improvement in the German educational system via a paradigm change under the motto "away from streaming, towards more assisting and insisting", the prerequisite of which is also a reform of teacher training. And Prof. Klaus Klemm, University of Duisburg-Essen, points out that approaches aimed at quality improvement are evident but "the number of measures that could reduce the inequality of opportunity are regrettably limited".
