English ahead of German and French as a world language

Among the foreign languages taught in Europe, English is by far in the lead. Examining the development of foreign language teaching since 1998, an increase in English learners can be observed in almost all countries, especially in eastern Europe, where more people have also been learning German, whereas in northern and western Europe German is losing importance.
