With a commission from the Leipziger Messe GmbH, the Ifo Institute examined the economic importance of the Leipzig Trade Fair and convention activities in the Leipzig area, the new federal states and the German Federal Republic as a whole. The results showed that in 2002 the production and job-creation effects stimulated by fairs, conventions as well as special events at the Leipzig Trade Fair grounds amounted to €352 million (production effect) and more than 4,800 jobs – a considerable economic and socio-economic effect. In regional-economic terms, the events on the Leipzig Trade Fair grounds accounts for approximately 3,950 jobs in the new federal states. The Leipzig Trade Fair is thus an economic and job factor that is not to be underestimated. Even if the competition edge that western German trade fair sites have accumulated over several decades cannot be matched, some Leipzig Trade Fair events qualify for exerting supraregional effects.
