In recent years progress has been made towards reaching a service economy in Germany. Statistically we can already speak of a change from an industrial to a service economy. However, according to Prof. Martin Baethge of Göttingen University, "the statistics give a limited picture of whether we have an industrial or a service economy". In his opinion the institutional conversion has not yet been concluded. Also Prof. Dieter Spath, Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Engineering (IAO) and the University of Stuttgart, and Marc Opitz, IAO, answer the question with Yes and No, because they still see considerable deficits in the development and performance of the service economy.
