ifo Researchers Receive Heinz König Young Scholar Award from ZEW

Felix Rösel, scientist at the ifo Institute’s Dresden Branch, and Christian Ochsner, CERGE-EI and formerly ifo Dresden, received the Heinz König Young Scholar Award from ZEW for their work in populism research.

ZEW notes that “with their work, Ochsner and Rösel help us understand the mechanisms that can lead to the success of populist communication.”

In their work entitled “Activated History – The Case of the Turkish Sieges of Vienna,” Rösel and Ochsner examine how the anti-Islam campaigns of Austria’s FPÖ have affected the party’s share of the vote since 2005. They show that this rhetoric falls on particularly fertile ground in places that experienced acts of violence in the context of the Turkish sieges of Vienna in the 16th and 17th centuries.

The paper was published as CESifo Working Paper 6568. This was the 21st time that ZEW has presented the Heinz König Young Scholar Award, which comes with an endowment of EUR 5,000.
