Blockchain Technology in Use or Planned at 7.2% of Companies in Germany

7.2% of companies in Germany use or plan to use blockchain technology for their business processes. In June 2023, that figure was 6.9%. One in five companies are discussing potential application fields. For around 73% of companies, it is not an issue. Blockchain is a decentralized database technology that enables transparent, secure, and automated transactions. “Blockchain is used in all sectors, with large companies using it the most frequently,” says industry expert Anna Wolf from the ifo Institute.

In manufacturing, 4.6% of large companies use blockchain, and 6% are planning to do so. One in four are discussing it. In construction, 5% of large companies are working with this technology, 19% are planning to use it, and one in three are discussing its use. 5.4% of large service providers use blockchain in their business processes, and one in four plan to use it or are dealing with this issue. Wholesalers see hardly any potential applications for blockchain technology. In retail, on the other hand, 8.6% are already using blockchain.

The share of companies working with blockchain technology varies greatly depending on the industry. In automotive engineering, advertising and market research companies, logistics companies, IT service providers, and consulting firms, blockchain technology is used by at least one in ten companies. “The fields of application range from tracking raw materials and components to compliance with ethical, social and ecological standards, and forgery-proof documentation of work steps carried out,” says Wolf.
