In Saxony’s manufacturing, sentiment saw strong improvement in October. The main reason for this was very significant growth in current business. There was a noticeable improvement in business expectations, too. In October, Saxony’s industrial companies were in a positive mood again for the first time since the beginning of the year.

In Saxony’s service sector, the Business Climate Index fell a little further. Participating service providers’ assessments of their current business situation declined slightly, as did their business expectations.

The mood in Saxony’s trade clouded over somewhat in October. While business expectations in this sector continued to rise, current business plummeted compared to the previous month.

The business climate in Saxony’s construction turned slightly more optimistic. The construction companies surveyed stated that they were considerably more satisfied with their current business. Their outlook for the coming six months improved again somewhat.

The ifo Business Climate for Saxony is based on approx. 500 monthly survey responses from businesses in manufacturing, the service sector, trade, and construction. Companies are asked to give their assessments of the current business situation and their expectations for the next six months. They can describe their situation as “good,” “satisfactory,” or “poor” and their business expectations for the next six months as “more favorable,” “unchanged,” or “less favorable.” The balance value of the current business situation is the difference in the percentage shares of the responses “good” and “poor”; the balance value of the expectations is the difference in the percentage shares of the responses “more favorable” and “less favorable.” The business climate is a transformed mean of the balances of the business situation and the expectations. To calculate the index values, the transformed balances are all normalized to the average for the year 2015.
