COVID-19 and the Economy – How Threatened is Germany’s Prosperity?
The highly infectious lung disease COVID-19 has achieved rapid, uncontrolled spread worldwide. To fight the pandemic and avoid overstretching health care capacity, the federal and state governments in Germany have severely restricted economic and social life. Many companies have cut back or stopped production due to interrupted supply chains. It is already becoming evident that the economic and social costs of COVID-19 are enormous. Can we make a success of restarting? What impact will the COVID-19 crisis have on the German economy? Can there be a return to normal in the near future? What have we learned from the crisis?
Joe Kaeser, Chairman of the Managing Board of the Siemens AG, Dr. Elga Bartsch, Head of Macro Research, Blackrock, and Sabine Herold, Managing partner, DELO, gave us assessments of these questions. Together with ifo President Clemens Fuest they discussed the topic “COVID-19 and the Economy – How Threatened is Germany’s Prosperity?”.
