German Manufacturers Want to Increase Production
German manufacturers’ production expectations have improved considerably. After measuring 21.5 points in February, the indicator rose to 30.4 points in March – its highest level since 1991. This is a finding from the most recent ifo Business Survey. “Order books are filling up, and there is still some catching up to do in the wake of the crisis last year,” says ifo expert Klaus Wohlrabe. Almost all sectors have announced plans to increase production. “The automotive and electrical industries in particular are looking to greatly expand their production,” Wohlrabe adds.

L’Institut ifo a revu à la baisse ses prévisions de croissance pour 2024 à 0,7 %, alors qu’il prévoyait encore une croissance de 0,9 % à la mi-décembre. « Nous estimons que le budget fédéral récemment approuvé par la commission budgétaire prévoit des économies supplémentaires de près de 19 milliards d’euros », explique Timo Wollmershäuser, directeur des enquêtes conjoncturelles de l’Institut ifo. « Les entreprises et les ménages font face à une hausse ou à une moindre baisse des charges, qui s'accompagne d’une réduction des dépenses publiques. Le montant global est donc proche des prévisions que nous avions établies en décembre dans le cadre de notre analyse des risques pour 2024. Les conséquences pour l’économie devraient être du même ordre de grandeur. »

The Human Resources departments of German companies are becoming increasingly reluctant to hire new staff. The ifo Employment Barometer fell to 100.0 points in June after measuring 100.3 points in May. The number of new hires still exceed the number of layoffs.
EU in Quandary over Oil Embargo against Russia
According to the ifo Institute, Europe is in a quandary over whether to halt oil imports from Russia. “On the one hand, waiting with a decision would give the EU more time to better prepare by organizing alternative energy sources, reducing demand, and also optimizing the logistics of energy flows within the EU and across countries,” says ifo researcher Karen Pittel. “On the other hand, an oil embargo should not be postponed forever either, as more time would allow Russia to find other buyers while continuing to earn revenue from the EU.” A postponement would also reduce incentives in EU countries to prepare for a cutoff of Russian energy supplies.
ifo Institute: One-Fifth of German Companies Consider Themselves at Risk
Just over a fifth of German companies deem their survival to be at risk as a result of the coronavirus crisis. This is the result of the ifo Institute’s latest survey. In June, 21 percent of the companies surveyed responded that the adverse effects of the coronavirus crisis put their very survival in danger. “We could see a wave of insolvencies in the coming months,” ifo researcher Stefan Sauer says.
ifo President Fuest Welcomes Scholz and Altmaier’s Economic Package
Clemens Fuest, President of the ifo Institute, has welcomed the package of measures presented by German Finance Minister Olaf Scholz and Economics Minister Peter Altmaier. “The measures point in the right direction. They build on our experience of the 2008 financial crisis, but are adapted to the special circumstances of the current crisis. The focus on liquidity support does justice to this,” Fuest said in Munich on Friday.

Les économistes constatent une faible amélioration du contexte économique en France par rapport au trimestre précédent. C’est ce qui ressort de l’Economic Experts Survey (EES), un sondage trimestriel réalisé par l’Institut ifo et l’Institut de politique économique suisse IWP dans le monde entier.

Better Science Teachers Mean Better Student Performance
Schoolchildren achieve better science grades when their teacher has specialist training in the subject they teach. This has been shown in an evaluation of international student data by Pietro Sancassani of the ifo Center for the Economics of Education. Germany was not included in the study because all science teachers there already have specialist training. Around one-fifth of the effect qualified teachers have on student performance can be ascribed to the fact that teachers feel more confident delivering the course material. The remaining causes have yet to be established.

Les constructeurs automobiles allemands et leurs équipementiers estiment que leurs affaires vont actuellement mieux qu'au mois d'août. La situation globale reste cependant mauvaise. C'est ce qui ressort de la toute dernière enquête conjoncturelle de l'Institut ifo. Au mois de septembre, l'indicateur correspondant est monté à –19,0 points, après –35,9 points en août. Cet indicateur avait atteint son niveau le plus bas au mois d'avril, avec –87,0 points. « D'abord catastrophique, puis très, très mauvaise, la situation est aujourd'hui simplement mauvaise : c'est en ce sens que l'on peut parler d’un progrès », explique Stefan Sauer, expert de l'Institut ifo.
Germany’s Export Expectations Dip Slightly (August 2023)
Sentiment in the German export industry has deteriorated slightly. The ifo Export Expectations fell to minus 6.3 points in August, down from minus 6.0 points in July. “German exporters continue to struggle with weak global demand,” says Klaus Wohlrabe, Head of Surveys at ifo. “More and more companies are also complaining about being less able to compete at the global level.”

The ifo Institute has advocated expanding the participation of women in the German labor force, describing this as a necessary step to stabilize the social security systems when the baby boomers retire. ifo Economic Forecast for Eastern Germany and Saxony: Robust Despite Turbulence
The outlook for the global economy has deteriorated significantly since December 2021. Nevertheless, the economy in eastern Germany and Saxony is likely to continue expanding. In the current year, economic output in those regions will grow by 2.9 and 1.8 percent respectively (Germany: 2.5 percent). Assuming that it is still possible to avoid an undersupply of natural gas this coming winter, economic output in eastern Germany is likely to be 3.5 percent higher year over year in 2023; in Saxony, gross domestic product will increase by 3.3 percent (Germany: 3.7 percent).
L’indice ifo continue d'augmenter malgré la crise russo-ukrainienne
Le moral des dirigeants d'entreprise allemands s'est considérablement éclairci. L'indice ifo du climat des affaires a progressé, passant de 96,0 points (corrigé des variations saisonnières) en janvier à 98,9 points en février. Si les entreprises se sont déclarées plus satisfaites de leur situation actuelle, leurs attentes ont même connu une nette progression. L'économie allemande mise sur une fin prochaine de la pandémie de Covid-19, bien que l'aggravation de la crise autour de l'Ukraine demeure un facteur de risque.
Short-Time Work in Germany Increases Slightly
The number of short-time workers in Germany rose slightly in January. There are currently 205,000 people on short-time work, up from 186,000 in December, according to estimates by the ifo Institute based on its Business Surveys and figures from the German Federal Employment Agency. This corresponds to 0.6 percent of the workforce. “Short-time work remains at a low level, which is fairly typical for a very mild winter recession,” says ifo researcher Sebastian Link.

L’indice ifo du climat des affaires à nouveau en hausse
Le moral des entreprises s'est nettement amélioré, comme le montre la progression de l'indice ifo du climat des affaires, de 85,7 points en février à 87,8 points[1] en mars. Les prévisions des entreprises s'avèrent beaucoup moins pessimistes. L'évaluation de la situation actuelle affiche elle aussi une amélioration. Une lueur d'espoir se profile à l’horizon pour l’économie allemande.
