Economic Experts Survey: Inflation Remains High Worldwide (Q1 2023)
How are economists’ expectations for future price developments evolving worldwide? Are the central banks’ sizeable interest rate hikes having an impact, and can we observe a decline in inflation expectations? The latest wave of the Economic Expert Survey (EES) conducted by the ifo Institute and the Swiss Economic Policy Institute examines economists’ inflation expectations at the global level. The result: high inflation rates are still expected worldwide. It is true that the expected inflation rate for 2023 has slowly declined over the past three quarters. However, there have been no noticeable changes compared with the last wave of the EES survey (Q4 2022).

The leading economic research institutes expect GDP to increase by 0.3% in the current year and by 1.5% in 2024. At 6.0%, the inflation rate in 2023 will be only slightly lower than in the previous year. The rate is not expected to fall noticeably until next year, in particular due to declining energy prices.

Banks in Europe and America are currently gripped by a great deal of uncertainty. The 42nd ifo and FAZ Economists Panel focuses on the current turmoil in the financial system. The survey, in which 132 economics professors participated, was conducted from March 23 to March 30, 2023.
ifo Business Climate Saxony Improves Moderately (March 2023)
The ifo Business Climate Index Saxony rose slightly in March. The barometer of business sentiment in Saxony’s economy climbed from 95.6 points in February to 96.8 points in March. The Saxony-based companies surveyed reported a somewhat less positive business situation than in the previous month but raised their business expectations considerably.
ifo Business Climate Eastern Germany: Index Rises (March 2023)
Sentiment among companies in eastern Germany improved slightly in March. The ifo Business Climate Index for the entire regional economy rose to 95.4 points, up from 94.8 points in February. The companies surveyed adjusted their assessments of the current situation slightly downward, while their outlook for the next six months improved somewhat.

In the first quarter of 2023, the Randstad ifo Personnel Manager Survey focused on the vacation culture in German companies. On average, these grant 29 days of recreational leave.
ifo Employment Barometer Rises (March 2023)
German companies are once again willing to hire more staff. The ifo Employment Barometer rose to 99.9 points in March, up from 99.4 points in February. “The labor market is proving very robust,” says Klaus Wohlrabe, Head of Surveys at ifo. “Service providers in particular are looking for new employees.”
ifo Export Expectations Brighter (March 2023)
Sentiment among German exporters has brightened somewhat. The ifo Export Expectations rose to 4.0 points in March, up from 3.5 points in February. “Export demand still lacks some momentum,” says Klaus Wohlrabe, Head of Surveys at ifo. “Global economic development is rather subdued.”
ifo Business Climate Index Rises (March 2023)
Sentiment in German business has improved. The ifo Business Climate Index rose to 93.3 points in March, up from 91.1 points in February. This is its fifth consecutive rise. This upward development was driven primarily by business expectations; companies also assessed their current business as somewhat better. Despite turbulence at some international banks, the German economy is stabilizing.

ifo Economic Forecast Spring 2023: German Economy Stagnating
Price-adjusted GDP will stagnate at around the prior-year level this year (−0.1%) and increase by 1.7% next year. At 6.2% on average, the inflation rate in 2023 will be only slightly lower than a year earlier. The rate is not expected to fall to 2.2% until next year.

The ifo Business Climate Index Saxony rose appreciably in February. The barometer of business sentiment in Saxony’s economy climbed from 93.6 points in January to 95.4 points in February. The Saxony-based companies surveyed reported a significantly better business situation than in the previous month and again raised their business expectations somewhat.
ifo Business Climate Eastern Germany: Economic Engine Gathers Speed (February 2023)
Sentiment among companies in eastern Germany improved markedly in February. The ifo Business Climate Index for the entire regional economy rose to 94.7 points, up from 92.6 points in January. The companies surveyed raised their overall assessments of the current situation appreciably, while their outlook for the next six months improved noticeably.
