The problem and control regions are classified in the study according to two main dimensions: 1. the dimension of economic performance, and 2. the dimension of the nature of causes of economic distress. The former which rests on statistical elaborations on macro-regional data is carried out in this part of the study and the latter is seperately done on the basis of the results of the survey that is conducted among 10,000 companies from industry and business service sectors in those regions in order to find out how they assess the factors shaping regional competitivness. The main purpose of the quantitative analysis is to identify and to examine the disparities of economic development of the regions from the macro-regional point of view. On the basis of its results, a systematical classification of the investigated region is made. Subsequently, the classification provides opportunities to compare the outcome of the survey and also proposes possibilities of combining the survey result with other relevant regional information.
